(The 2 x 5 litre demijohns and silicon rubber bungs shown in this photo are not
included.)
A simple gravity feed system using silicon rubber, stainless steel and glass.
The alcohol syphons out from the upper demijohn and is carried to the bottom of
the carbon bottle, where the alcohol slowly rises up through the carbon, passes
through the filter pad and drips into the collection demijohn. The drip rate can be controlled by adjusting the height
difference between the two vessels. At one drip per second, the efficiency, simplicity and cost effectiveness of this system
is unbeaten. The problem with column carbon treatment systems is "channelling", otherwise known as "tracking". When a
liquid passes through the carbon it finds the path of least resistance, thereby reducing the exposure of the liquid to the carbon.
This is particularly pronounced when the liquid travels downward. The Rising Column solves this by having the liquid travel vertically
upwards.
